Where to go in College Station for art and culture

A woman in a gallery

When people think of College Station, TX, the first thing they expect to find is a school boomtown that’s bubbling with youthful energy. In a way, they are right. After all, the said city is home to the main campus of Texas A&M University. Not many know that there’s more to College Station than a thriving student scene.

Over the years, the art and culture scene in College Station has grown significantly. It has, in fact, become a cultural hub in the heart of the Lone Star State. So, if part of your list of things to do in College Station is to check out the cultural essence of America, below are several destinations to visit:

Forsyth Galleries and J. Wayne Stark Galleries
275 Joe Routt Boulevard

Texas A&M University boasts two art galleries within its campus grounds – Forsyth Galleries and J. Wayne Stark Galleries. Both have reopened after the winter holidays last January 21 and are enforcing strict safety measures for guests like physical distancing and the wearing of face masks.

Established in 1989, Forsyth Galleries is home to 19th and early 20th-century art. Aside from paintings, this art hub also features glass pieces created by the likes of Thomas Webb & Sons, Stevens & Williams, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Steuben, and Mt. Washington Glass Co.

Wayne Stark Galleries, meanwhile, is where you will find an extensive collection of Texan art. Named after distinguished A&M alumnus, J. Wayne Stark, this gallery exhibits paintings, prints, and photographs that truly define the American soul. Works of nationally acclaimed artists like Julian Onderdonk, H.O. “Cowboy” Kelly, and Dorothy Hood are permanently featured here.

George H.W. Bush Presidential Library & Museum
1000 George Bush Drive West

As its presidential name suggests, this library and museum’s main focus is the life and contributions of former US president, George H.W. Bush. Here, you will come across an extensive array of artifacts, films, photographs, documents, music, sound effects, and interactive videos of the life and times of this American president since 1941.

The museum is currently closed due to the COVID-19. However, you can still experience history through the virtual tours on their website.

Museum of the American G.I.
19124 Highway 6 South

Texas A&M is known as one of the top military schools in the country. That said, it isn’t surprising that the Museum of the American G.I. is found here. This museum is dedicated to preserving the legacy of American servicemen and women. It features restored vehicles, uniforms, and weapons that were used in several wars. In memory of our war heroes, the Texas Veterans Heroes Exhibit here showcases 3,417 personalized dog tags of servicemen and women who were killed during the Vietnam War.

The Wright Gallery
Langford Architecture Building, Texas A&M University

Located at the College of Architecture within Texas A&M, Wright Gallery showcases works from a combination of up-and-coming and seasoned artists. These artists come from underrepresented groups and their works promote dialogue on art and representation.

Benjamin Knox Gallery
405 University Drive East

This is not just an art gallery but also an eclectic wine bar and events place. Local artist and Texas A&M professor Benjamin Knox runs this museum that features his very own artworks. His paintings are inspired by historical masters like Rembrandt and Monet, as well as more recent artists like Anders Zorn and Isaak Levitan.

Santa’s Wonderland
18898 Highway 6

The Christmas season for 2020 may have wrapped up already but that’s no excuse not to include this cheery seasonal amusement park in this list. Just imagine the North Pole getting transported to Texas and you’ll get an idea of how wonderful it will be to plan a trip here with the whole family come Christmas 2021. Go on a thrilling hayride tour or a romantic carriage ride and see the stunning lights and sights. There are also other exciting facilities here like a petting zoo and an outdoor area for ice skating.

Hurricane Harry’s
313 College Avenue

Rocking since 1992, Hurricane Harry’s is an institution among students from Texas A&M. After all, it’s one of the oldest dance halls in College Station where generations of students have virtually danced the night away to live music and celebrated academic achievements with a drink or two. Even people from around the area can come around and join in the fun. It continues to hold live concerts, this time, with some health measures in place.

The vibrancy and the cultural relevance of College Station and its attractions are among the reasons why it is a great place to live in. Interested in settling here and making new memories?
