The best of College Station, TX: Why you’ll want to live here

living in college station tx

At the heart of Brazos County in Texas is College Station or, as the locals call it, “Aggieland.” It’s best known for being the home of Texas A&M University, the largest public university in Texas by enrollment. Family- and student-friendly, College Station’s overall vibe is lively and youthful, fueled by a palpable school spirit. College Station is one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas. Along with its twin city Bryan, College Station is also widely recognized as one of the best places in Texas to start a business and to retire. As a growing, thriving community with a strong emphasis on education and higher learning, College Station offers the best of small-town living mixed with metropolitan ease and convenience. Here are a few of our most favorite things about the city.

Location, location, location!

College Station’s prime location in eastern Texas makes it highly accessible. It lies close to several major highways, including State Highway 6 (Earl Rudder Freeway), which directly runs through the center of College Station. This makes it easy to travel to any one of Texas’ bigger cities. Houston is the nearest major city, less than two hours away from College Station. The drive west to Austin takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Further west is San Antonio, which is a three-hour car ride away. Meanwhile, the Dallas-Fort Worth area is roughly the same distance, north from College Station.

College Station’s dining scene has definitely grown in the last few years. Plenty of locally-owned restaurants have popped up throughout the city, offering a wide range of cuisines and dining experiences. Here are some of the best and most exciting restaurants in College Station you shouldn’t miss!

  • Chef Tai’s Gourmet Food Truck. Chef Tai is College Station royalty. His famous Gourmet Food Truck was voted as America’s Favorite Food Truck over a decade ago, and it’s still serving upscale bites at street-food prices. You can find Chef Tai’s Gourmet Food Truck within the Texas A&M University campus.
  • Christopher’s World Grille. Owned by award-winning chef Christopher Lampo, this fine-dining steakhouse has been a Bryan-College Station favorite for over 20 years. Voted as one of the Top 100 Most Romantic Restaurants in America, Christopher’s World Grille is definitely the place for special dinners.
  • Chicken Oil Company. When it comes to casual dining, this Bryan-College Station staple gets high marks. It’s been serving signature burgers, chicken fried steaks, and mouthwatering sandwiches since 1977 and it’s showing no signs of slowing down.
  • MAD Taco. The lunch lines tend to get long at College Station’s favorite MAD Taco. Make no mistake though, this is not your typical taco chain, so expect fresh flavors and the best ingredients! MAD Taco is especially known for their Tamale Bread, which serves as the base of their tacos.
  • 1775 Texas Pit BBQ. This list would not be complete without mentioning where to get darn good barbecue! For down-home Texas barbecue, you can never go wrong with 1775 Texas Pit BBQ. Go early because they sell out real quick daily!
  • Dixie Chicken. A famous College Station spot that’s been around since 1974, Dixie Chicken is a beloved hangout of students and alums alike. Their menu features a great selection of burgers and fried chicken.

Calling all sports fans

Football isn’t just a sport in College – it’s an event! Texas A&M’s football team is widely supported by the 12th Man, which is what we call Aggie students. And you’ll see big crowds of the 12th Man standing up in stadiums, cheering for their team. One of A&M’s sports traditions that is deeply embedded in the local culture is the Aggie Bonfire. It’s lit up to highlight the university’s long-standing football rivalry with the University of Texas. Football aside, there’s plenty of room for other sports in College Station. The city has excellent sporting facilities for tennis, soccer, baseball, basketball, volleyball, track and field, softball, and even hockey.
