How to Maximize Your Bedroom Space

Mock up interior bedroom

As one of the most important rooms in the home, your bedroom offers respite from the demands of daily life. It should ideally be a quiet and comfortable space where you can enjoy some privacy. If your bedroom is smaller than you’d like, here are some ways to make the most of the space.

  1. Paint the walls white

Light colors can make your bedroom appear more spacious, especially if it gets plenty of natural light. White paint with an eggshell or satin finish is an excellent choice for the bedroom as it reflects light and opens up the space. Off white is a warm shade of white can make your bedroom feel cozier while making the space look larger. It’s easy to work with and create a clean backdrop for all kinds of decor.

If you’re worried that at all-white white bedroom might be too drab for your taste, try layering different textures and patterns of white. You can also have an accent wall with a pop of color or bring in accent rugs and throw pillows while painting the rest of the room white.

Lastly, put together a gallery wall with colorful photos above the headboard or the doorway if you don’t want to have too many blank walls. This takes full advantage of empty spaces without it looking too busy.

  2. Choose a platform bed

Every inch of space counts when it comes to a small bedroom, so say goodbye to your bulky bed frame and replace it with a simple platform bed. This is a modern and elegant choice that can help free up some space. If you really want a traditional bed frame, go for the lightweight option with a slim headboard.

  3. Move your bed and other furniture to the wall

Push your bed, desk, and cabinets up against a wall or corner to maximize floor space. Doing so will create a sleeping area that feels more open and spacious. You can also install lightweight cabinets and shelves around your bed instead of buying free-standing tables and dressers. If your bedroom is narrow and rectangular, try placing your bed horizontally against the wall and arranging the furniture diagonally from each other across the room.

  4. Keep it simple and clutter-free

Make the most of your space by pairing your furniture and personal belongings down to the bare essentials. The primary purpose of your bedroom is sleep and relaxation, so keep decorative pieces and accessories to a minimum. This might be a good time to clean, declutter, and edit your space. Be more selective when bringing new objects into the room to avoid wasting precious space.

  5. Use built-in storage

If you really must hold onto all of your things, make use of contemporary built-ins for additional storage. Consider installing a long floating shelf above the bed so that you have a place for your books, frames, plants, and candles. Choose a bed frame or platform with built-in drawers. If your bed frame doesn’t have built-in drawers, you can still maximize the space by placing storage boxes beneath the bed. This lets you keep your shoes, bed sheets, and off-season clothing and decor out of sight.

  6. Add a mirror

Just like white walls, mirrors reflect light and create the illusion of a larger room. Add a full-length mirror to your decor to make the space feel less cramped. Place a mirror in front of a window to amplify the amount of natural light in the room. If you don’t want a mirror, try adding reflective objects with chrome or metal finishes to your decor. These pieces will help reflect light across the room.

  7. Utilize the space at the foot of your bed

If you like to study, work, or hang out with friends and family in your bedroom, add a bench with some throw pillows at the foot of the bed. This helps create extra seating without crowding up the space. You can also add sturdy storage chests at the foot of the bed. This lets you store accessories, sweaters, or towels while providing additional seating.

If you want room to write or study, add a small side table instead for your books or papers. Use a small stool for seating on days when you feel like reading or drawing in your bedroom.
