Brazos County

Brazos County is part of the College Station-Bryan, TX, metropolitan area (The College Station-Bryan metropolitan statistical area is a metropolitan area in the Brazos Valley region of Texas that covers four counties: Brazos, BurlesonGrimes, and Robertson.) and is home to 194,851 people (source: 2010 United States Census).  This sizeable county that is part of East Central Texas is named for and bordered by the Brazos River. Back in the late 1800s, Brazos County was considered one of the poorest counties in Texas. However, during the 1870s, the county donated 2,416 acres of land in order to build Texas A&M University. This generous donation and leap of faith taken by county officials paid off in a major way. Thanks to the university, which is considered one of the top public universities in the country, and the influx of money its presence brings, Brazos County is now considered one of the most financially successful counties in Texas.

Getting Around Brazos

One of the major draws for new residents is Brazos’ public transportation system. While major Texas cities like San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, and Austin offer public transportation, many other communities in the state lack this convenience. Residents without a vehicle can take advantage of the fixed bus service and paratransit system that is operated by the Brazos Transit District. Transportation routes run through Bryan and College Station.

Brazos Communities
Seven individual communities can be found within the boundaries of Brazos County. These communities are Bryan, Kurten, College Station, Millican, Booneville, Benchley, and Wixon Valley. Bryan is the county seat and has a population of 76,201. Major employers in Bryan College Station and the surrounding areas include the following:

  • Texas A& M University
  • Bryan Independent School District
  • Scott & White
  • Sanderson Farms
  • City of Bryan
  • Alenco
  • City of College Station
